Remembering Craig

Story

In the last few days of his life, Mum and I asked the late, inimitable, Craig Henshaw how he would like any money that people might spend toward flowers and such for the funeral. He was unequivocal when he asked for his friends and family to direct any such moneys to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF).

Undoubtedly ambitious, the ACRF believe a world without cancer is possible. That's why they fund the brightest minds with the boldest ideas in cancer research. Specifically, they invest in independently-assessed world-class research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. They also provide multimillion-dollar grants for high-end research equipment, technologies, and infrastructure development to support the work of Australian cancer scientists. In short, they're fighting the good fight in kicking cancer in the proverbial.

In September 2019, I ran the Sydney Marathon to fundraise for the ACRF. Following my participation in this fun (?) run, Dad and I were invited to the November 2019 opening of the ACRF Tumour Metabolism Laboratory - part of the ACRF Centenary Cancer Research Centre (link: https://www.acrf.com.au/news/latest-news/new-cancer-laboratory-launches/). Accordingly, both of us were lucky enough to personally witness the phenomenal impact that the world-class cancer research and technology is having in this space. The ACRF have a pivotal role in facilitating this work. And so, while we can't all necessarily be the ones to fix it, we CAN support the work combatting it. We CAN be optimistic about the considerable impact this work is having and how it will be felt by our nearest and dearest.

Please do not feel obliged to donate. Dad would not have wanted that. But if you do want to contribute, our family, and many others, would be most grateful.

Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF)

At Australian Cancer Research Foundation, we know that only brilliant ideas can tackle something as big as cancer. That is why since 1984, we have given scientists the technology, equipment and infrastructure they need for pioneering research. From small vaccines to big machines our funding has supported some of the biggest outcomes in cancer research, across Australia.

Over the last 40 years, we have invested $184 million into 86 cancer research projects across 44 institutions.

ACRF supporters have backed landmark projects such as; the development of the world’s first cancer vaccine (for cervical cancer), the establishment of a precision medicine program working towards the goal of zero deaths from childhood cancer and the creation of the innovative MRI-Linac which will improve patient outcomes and reduce the trauma associated with radiation therapy. By funding research that seeks to progress and transform the way we prevent, detect and treat ALL cancers, we are committed to our vision of one day reaching a world without cancer.
